Psycho-Therapy and Counseling FAQ 1:
What can counseling do for me?
This is an
opportunity for you to explore a range of personal issues.
These might include understanding yourself, your personality
and your motivations better. Or you might want to deal with
your unhappiness or lack of satisfaction with your life.
We can work with the specific troubling areas in your life,
usually directly or indirectly affecting your relationships.
Many clients move past their initial anxiety toward therapy
as they discover within the first few sessions that therapy
can be a place to discuss issues not previously explored
in a safe environment. This can result in leaving therapy
feeling a great deal better than before. Therapy is often
upbeat as we explore how your strengths can become more
visible to you and others in your life.
Uncomfortable feelings may arise during the course of your
therapy. This is an opportunity to have a professional beside
you as you step through your defenses and life hindrances.
Although I will encourage you to explore deeply held fears
and hopes, you will decide in each session how far you are
interested in delving into challenging issues and how much
you would like to self-disclose. Having a safe environment
is of primary importance! Although I am a mandated reporter
and must break confidentiality under certain circumstances
by law, all other information you share is confidential.
In therapy I help clients to be more aware of what they
contribute to their relationships. Old habits and patterns
may not produce the results you desire. We can work with
communications, assertiveness and conflict resolution skills
that are useful with close relationships as well as with
coworkers. Since it is recognized that the family unit affects
an individual's behavior and adjustments to life, analysis
to understand your family's past or present interactions
and patterns of behavior may enhance your therapeutic work.
Many people are high functioning on a day-to-day basis,
but have a low level of depression or anxiety that seems
to cloud their happiness. These feelings are very common
in Silicon Valley, where life often moves from one crisis
to another and people move often. If you are lonely or dissatisfied
with the way things are going in your life, you may want
to explore the benefits of therapy.
